In 1977, Ms Trump was born in what is now the Czech Republic, wed the former leader and after 15 years, in 1992, they got divorced.

“She was a wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman, who led a great and inspirational life,” Mr Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social.

Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump were their three children together.

According to the Associated Press, police suspect that the death may have been an accident.

Ms Trump was discovered unconscious near a staircase at her New York City residence, sources informed the news agency, and it’s thought she may have fallen.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Donald and Ivana Trump were well-known public celebrities in New York, and their divorce generated a great deal of interest from the general public.

Ms Trump launched her own business of jewellery, apparel, and cosmetics after they divorced.

She took credit for bringing up their children in her 2017 memoir Raising Trump, saying she “made the decisions about their education, activities, travel, child care, and allowances” until college.

She said in the book that she spoke to Mr Trump roughly once a week and added that their friendship has improved after their divorce.

The Trump family lauded her in a statement as “a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty, and a caring mother and friend”.

“Ivana Trump was a survivor. She fled from communism and embraced this country,” the statement added. “She taught her children about grit and toughness, compassion and determination.”

Eldest child Ivanka, who was said to be very close to her mother, said in an Instagram post she was “heartbroken”.

“Mom was brilliant, charming, passionate and wickedly funny. She modelled strength, tenacity and determination in her every action. She lived life to the fullest – never forgoing an opportunity to laugh and dance,” she wrote.

Ivana’s second spouse was Mr Trump. She supposedly married Alfred Winklmayr, an Austrian ski instructor and acquaintance, in order to get Austrian citizenship in her first marriage.

She was able to leave her communist homeland of Czechoslovakia thanks to that marriage without defecting.

Ms Trump, a lifelong skier, is rumoured to have participated in national competitions.

But in 1989, a local Olympic official disproved Mr Trump’s assertions that she was a backup on the 1972 Winter Olympic squad.

She held positions as a ski instructor and a model while residing in Canada in the 1970s.
