Britain’s 2024 election will go down in history as the Conservative Party’s worst defeat. In 1906, the party secured 156 seats. In the 2024 election, it won 121 seats.

Other records were also broken. The centrist Liberal Democrats won more seats than ever before, allegedly aided by leader Ed Davey, who has never met a wacky stunt he didn’t like. The Green Party also won four seats, their best result. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party will enter Parliament for the first time, winning four seats.

Keir Starmer became Prime Minister of Britain, ushering in a new era after 14 years of Conservative administration, following a surprise victory that brought his left-leaning Labour Party to power with a massive majority. Starmer met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace and was asked to establish an administration. Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer promised voters that his will be a “government of service,” saying, “You have given us a clear mandate, and we will use it to deliver change.”

Britain elected the most diverse Parliament in history. According to the British Future think group, a record 89 ethnic minority legislators were elected. The Fawcett Society, a women’s rights group, predicts that Parliament will have a record number of female lawmakers. One of them is Rachel Reeves, Britain’s first female chancellor, who was appointed on Friday.

It was also an important election for King Charles III. He has appointed three prime ministers throughout his two-year rule. But Keir Starmer was Charles’ first elected prime minister.
