According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will cease to function on iPhones running iOS 10 and iOS 11 later this year. According to the WhatsApp Help Center, only iOS 12 and later are currently supported.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), is one of the most popular instant messaging apps in the world, and the company frequently updates the app with new features. Because older operating systems may not support new features, newer versions may not work on older platforms.

It also costs money to support older operating systems, which makes no sense if only a small percentage of people use them.

WhatsApp has begun notifying iPhone users on iOS 10 and iOS 11 that they must upgrade to iOS 12 or later in order to continue using the app. Otherwise, the app will cease to function on their devices after October 24.

In case you’re wondering, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c are currently running iOS 10 and iOS 11, respectively, and are not eligible for another OS upgrade. Given that these devices were released around ten years ago, it’s safe to assume that not many people use them anymore. According to a January report, 72 percent of iPhone models released in the last four years are compatible with iOS 15.

Customers with the iPhone 5S, 6, or 6S can continue to use the app for the time being. If you’re an Android user, your phone must be running OS 4.1 or higher.

If your phone is no longer supported by security updates, you should upgrade; otherwise, you put yourself at risk.

Otherwise, you can always look for WhatsApp alternatives or simply send text messages.
